Living Small? Learn How to Make the Most of Limited Square Footage
Whether you are building a tiny home for yourself or an ADU for a loved one, smart design is essential for making a small living space comfortable. Living small is a trend that seems to be here to stay (at least here in Oregon, anyway), so builders are always looking for new techniques to make the most of limited space. Read on to learn some of our favorite tips and tricks that we’ve learned over the years to make a tiny house or ADU feel like a cozy, spacious home.
Built-In Wall Storage
When you design your new small living space from the ground up, you get the opportunity to build storage space right into the walls. This can be in the form of recessed cabinets, open shelving, or loft storage space.
By opting for a stowable bed, you can transform a living room into a guest bedroom in a matter of minutes. That’s almost like having another room in your tiny home or ADU! Murphy, roll-away, and platform beds are all great options.
Embed the TV
Save space by having your entertainment center (speakers, TV, etc) installed right into the wall. This way, you won’t need to bring in a bulky cabinet to hold everything.
If you are building a two-story, ADU or tiny home, take advantage of the space beneath the stairs with custom cabinetry. Alternatively, you could leave space open and create a storage nook.
Built-In Shower Storage
Although most small homeowners will want to save space by swapping out the bathtub for a standing shower unit only, a shower still takes up a significant amount of space. That’s why it’s important to ensure that your shower walls have enough built-in shelves that you won’t need any additional storage solutions for your bathing products.
One of our favorite space-saving tricks for any space, pocket doors are especially at home in custom-built tiny homes and ADU’s. Where a traditional hinge door will limit available space along its swinging radius, a pocket door slides into a wall and leaves the surrounding areas free to manipulate with furniture or other fixtures.
Foldable Dining Tables
Often in smaller homes, the living room and dining room are combined. This is easily managed with a foldable dining table that collapses for easy storage when living space is needed.
